Age bias is not a new phenomenon in the work place, it is merely new in
information technology.  We've finally become old enough as a discipline to
experience it.  As in many other fields of endeavor that suffer the effects
of age bias or for that matter any form of bias, the truth is often far
removed from the common assumptions.

While it is true that some older workers may have difficulty in learning
"new tricks", it is by no means a universal truth.  Furthermore, the time
spent retraining an experienced worker to use new technology tools often
pays great dividends since the new skills are layered upon the breadth and
depth of their experience and maturity.  These individuals can be a valuable
stabilizing influence within your technology teams, and you may well find
that their creativity and enthusiasm is fanned by the breath of new ideas
and challenges or even more surprising is the source of those ideas.
