A common technique used with phobias and anxiety disorders sometimes called
"exposure therapy" is probably the idea you are after.  I would search
Medline under 2 possible subject headings that might get at that
concept--"Desensitization, Psychologic" and possibly "Habituation
(Psychophysiology)".  You could search the psychology literature or social
science literature also for more articles on this but we get the Journal of
Anxiety Disorders which publishes a lot on this topic so the literature is
