Newfoundland is a much bigger and farther place than one might think.  For
example, the distance from St. John's on the eastern coast to Corner Brook
on the St. Lawrence side is more than one third the distance of driving all
the way back to MONTREAL!  Don't believe it?  Check it out on a scale map.
Lots of locals drive to their summer vacations in the three maritime
provinces from here in Ontario.  I have never met anyone who has driven to
Newfoundland.
