Position Available University of Nebraska Medical Center McGoogan Library of Medicine Outreach/Distance Services Librarian The McGoogan Library of Medicine is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual for the position of Outreach/Distance Services Librarian. Major responsibilities: providing reference services to off site students and faculty in person, by phone and via email; instructing off site users on searching of the medical literature; participating in the design, delivery, and evaluation of library instruction programs based on new and emerging technologies; responding to new developments in distance education. Minimum qualifications: an ALA accredited masters degree in library science and experience with a wide variety of personal computer applications. Preferred qualifications include at least one year of library experience, preferably in a medical library; previous teaching experience; experience with Internet based health information resources; excellent speaking and writing skills. A strong commitment to excellence in service and a team orientation are also sought. This is a Special (non-tenure leading) faculty appointment with appropriate rank, privileges, and fringe benefits. Services to distance learners include providing reference assistance in person, by phone and via email; providing literature searches and instruction in end-user searching of the medical literature using databases such as MEDLINE and PubMed; participating in the design, delivery, and evaluation of library instruction programs based on new and emerging technologies; and responding to new developments in distance education both on the UNMC campus and in the academic environment. This individual reports to the Head of Education and works closely with other members of the library staff to provide educational and reference services to other constituencies served by the library, including research investigators, patient care providers, and health consumers. Major Responsibilities: 1. Interact with UNMC faculty and students to anticipate and determine and off-campus user needs. 2. Recommend and implement innovative services for the Library's distance users. 3. Provide instruction on retrieval and critical evaluation of biomedical information. 4. Develop print and web-based instructional materials and user guides. 5. Provide reference assistance in person, by telephone and via email, including 6 - 8 hours per week at the Library reference desk. 6. Provide literature searches and instruction in end-user searching of the medical literature using databases such as MEDLINE. 7. Assist with provision of consumer health information services. 8. Participate in UNMC's annual medical student orientation as a small group facilitator. 9. Special projects as assigned.
