ALA recently approved the foundation of a new, companion organization with a different kind of non-profit status whose sole purpose will be to work on the behalf of librarians and library workers. There were some issues with ALA advocating for librarians and library workers and maintaining 501(c)(3) status, but this new organization will have the freedom to do much more. Mitch Freedman, the new ALA president and head of the current wave of the salaries movement, is very committed to seeing some real change.

The key is for us, the rank and file, to not throw up our hands and say "It'll never happen, so why bother." Please take a look at the task force toolkit at http://www.ala.org/pio/advocacy/better_salariestoolkit.pdf and get involved, either through ALA, MLA, SLA, or your state and local associations.
