A beautiful day at West Rutland Marsh today.
Eight participants tallied 26 species. Among the
birds spotted were: 18 swamp sparrows; 9 marsh
wrens (including an up-close look at a family
group); 3 American bitterns; 2 great blue herons;
1 red-tailed hawk; 13 gray catbirds; 140
red-winged blackbirds; 4 northern flickers; 1
pileated woodpecker; 3 yellow-bellied sapsuckers.
The only warblers were 2 common yellowthroat.

The highlight of the day, however, is the new
West Rutland Marsh boardwalk and viewing
platform! It is from this point the three
bitterns were seen along with a nose-to beak look
at a swamp sparrow. Many thanks to Dave McDevitt,
who led the project, Town Manager Tom Yennerell
and the Town of West Rutland. Check it out!
