Jeanne and Bill Prue submitted details to me about their Barn Owl
sighting in Orleans. I am intrigued enough by the report to forward it to
the list. Barn Owl occurs only rarely in the state.

> There are two
> railroad crossings on the River Rd. We saw them about a mile or so north of
> the northern railroad crossing at a two story white house with small,
> ramshackle barn, mostly tin. If you're coming from Orleans, the house would
> be on the right. There's a big ridge behind the house and barn. We followed
> one owl back and forth several times and suddenly the second one appeared.
> Time was just a guess but by the time we were done, it was about too dark to
> take pictures.
>
> We've ourselves questioned the possibility that these may be short-eared
> owls instead. We had a very good look at one of the birds, several times. It
> was a large bird, had a white breast with no streaking at all, heart-shaped
> face with black eyes and no visible ear tufts.
