Subj: Whiteface Mt receives more snow

WILMINGTON, N.Y. - After snow delayed Wednesday morning's opening of the
Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, additional overnight
accumulation has resulted in a similar fate on Thursday.
With two inches of fresh snow at the 4,867-foot summit, mountain
staff has announced another delayed start to the day on Thursday morning.
The highway is located 10 miles from Lake Placid.
"There's definitely more snow than yesterday," said highway supervisor
J.R. Hoyt. "Coming up it was sunny, but at the top it's cloudy with zero
visibility and the road is slick. So it's best we open later when it's
warmer and the roadway melts."
At 9:30 a.m., the temperature was 29 degrees with very light snowfall.
The Veterans Memorial Highway, which begins in the town of Wilmington as a
three-mile county road prior to continuing with the five-mile highway, is a
popular summer and autumn tourist attraction, particularly during fall
foliage season.
The highway's final day of operation is Columbus Day, Oct. 13.
