My neighbors around the corner have watched a brooding mallard and have a
question. The female laid eleven eggs and starting setting on April 13. The first
duckling was hatched today. That's 40 days. My friends think that is
abnormally long. Is it?

The nest was close to their house under a cedar tree, and it's the second
year in a row they've nested there. The female mallard got very used to my friend
"talking" to her every day and would stay put. My friend even petted her one
day.
