Greetings, VTLepsters: First, take a look at what drifted into my garden on 14Aug: http://www.wingsphotography.com/tiger.html The wisdom from the experts far more skilled than I believe this is an Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail (Pterourus appalachiensis), affectionately known as an "Appy." I won't go into details (I'm still working on figuring them out). Kent and I will prepare a fact sheet on Tigers for everyone next year. But, if you're so inclined, please do collect any Tigers you encounter this late in the season. We should be seeing Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (P. glaucus) now (if not more Appies). Meanwhile, please be on the lookout for -- and let us know about -- fields of flowering red clover or alfalfa, especially those attracting Monarchs. Monarch-tagging season has begun. (Make sure it's OK with the farmer before any taggers start trampling fields.)
