18 participants counted 26 species at today's
monitoring walk at West Rutland Marsh.

Soon-to-be departing marsh birds included 2 marsh
wrens, 5 gray catbirds, 11 swamp sparrows, 42
red-winged blackbirds and 25 common grackles.
Also, as a sign of the season, a skein of 62
Canada geese was observed.

Other highlights included 1 wood duck (a
flyover), 1 sharp-shinned hawk, 1 Cooper's hawk,
1 red-tailed hawk, 1 immature yellow-bellied
sapsucker, 2 northern flickers, 4 eastern
phoebes, 56 blue jays, 28 eastern bluebirds, and
7 song sparrows.
