Vermont in Second Place After First Day  of Dartmouth Winter Carnival

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont ski team is in second place by three points after the first day of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, which is being held at the Dartmouth Skiway and Trapp Family Lodge.

Vermont has 334.5 points, second to Dartmouth’s 337.5. Middlebury is within striking distance with 302 points.

Senior Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) won the men’s 5-kilometer classical race by nearly 18 seconds over Catamount teammate Ethan Foster (Weston, Vt.). Ryan Foster (Weston, Vt.) finished in a tie for fifth with Dartmouth’s Benjamin True, both crossing the line in 34:07.0. Jordi St. John (So. Londonderry, Vt.) of Vermont was 10th, while Anders Osthus (Duluth, Minn.) finished 11th.

In the women’s 5-K classical event, Dartmouth’s Alison Crocker continued her outstanding season with another win on the Trapp course. Vermont’s Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.) finished fifth while Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) was ninth and Molly Gray (Newbury, Vt.) was 15th.

In the alpine races, Ashley Spina (Guildhall, Vt.) finished fourth in the women’s giant slalom, just ahead of teammate Hilary McCloy (Bethel, Maine). Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) finikshed seventh while Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.) was 10th.

In the men’s GS race, Vermont’s Greg Hardy (Stratton, Vt.) finished second to Colby’s Warner Nickerson while Evan Weiss of Dartmouth was third. Catamount Paul Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) was 12th.
