Denver Surges To The Lead After Second Day of NCAA Ski Championship

STOWE, Vt. – Denver University erased a 43-point deficit and surged to the lead after the second day of the 2005 NCAA Ski Championship at Trapp Family Lodge Thursday.

The University of Vermont is now in second place with 348 points heading into Friday’s slalom races on Hayride at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Denver swept three of the top four places in the men’s 10-kilometer classical race, with Rene Reisshauer winning the individual title in 30:49.1, followed by teammate John Stene in second place in 31:10.9. Colorado’s Henrik Hoye finished third in 31:16.4 to break up the Denver sweep attempt, but Denver’s Havard Selseng was fourth in 31:21.4. Bryan Cook of Northern Michigan was fifth in 31:34.2.

For the Catamounts, Ethan Foster (Weston, Vt.) was 11th in a time of 32:09.7 while Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) was 13th (32:13.6) and Ryan Foster (Weston, Vt.) was 22nd in 32:56.0.

In the women’s 5-K classical race, Mandy Kaempf of Alaska-Anchorage won the individual title, crossing the finish line in 17:19.3 to top Northern Michigan’s Lindsay Williams, who was second in 17:29.1. Martina Stursova of New Mexico was third (17:49.3) while Dartmouth’s Alison Crocker was fourth in 17:51.2 and Laura Valaas of Whitman College was fifth in 18:04.4.

The top finisher for Vermont was Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.), who was 21st in 19:08.2. Emilia DeMarchis (Burlington, Vt.) was 27th in 19:13.0, while Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) was 32nd with a time of 19:34.7.

The Pioneers now lead after two days of the 2005 NCAA Ski Championship with 369 points. Vermont is now second with 348 points, with Dartmouth in third with 296 points. Utah is fourth with 289 points and New Mexico is fifth with 274 points.
 
The competition continues Friday with the slalom races at Hayride at the Stowe Mountain Resort.
