In Montpelier in the woods behind our house I stopped for a couple of
minutes to survey the scene actually looking through the eyes of which trees
to help out and which to turn into firewood for next year.
Then a woodcock exploded from about 3 feet away and flew off whistling up
the hill. I, of course, had not seen it, even though I probably stared
right at it at least three times.
A good lesson in awareness.

Also notable in our woods yesterday:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Winter Wren
Phoebe
Turkey Vulture
Raven
