A tree sparrow was competing with a song sparrow for seed beneath the feeder late this afternoon.

When I got home, the ruffed grouse, which has taken up residence beneath three large cedars across the street, next to a small woodlot, ran over and up the lawn to within two feet of me. He walked back and forth with his neck and upper back feathers in full ruffle, clucking very softly.

Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior?
