Join a group of educators reading and discussing Teaching Mathematics through Problem Solving.  We will first grapple with the issues and perspectives involved in teaching through problem solving.  Next we will look at task and tools for teaching through problem solving.  Then we will analyze how problem solving can be used in the classroom.  As we work through the book, we will gather problems that we have seen or used to teach or deepen conceptual knowledge necessary for the middle school student.

May 12: 3:30-4:00 PM:  preliminary meeting—hand out book and syllabus, and decide on location

May 26: 12:30-4:00 PM: chapters 1-4, and 16—Why problem solving?

June 9: 12:30-4:00 PM: chapters 5-8—How to choose problems

June 23: 12:30-4:00 PM: chapters 9-12—How does this work in the classroom? Also, review problems and connections
