June 9, 2005 Cochran and Cote Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women’s At-Large Team BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior Kami Cote (Copperton, Utah) and junior Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women’s At-Large Team as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. To earn a spot on the team student-athletes must own a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and have participated in 50 percent of the team’s contests. Cote, a member of the women’s hockey team, was named to the second team, while Cochran, a member of the women’s soccer and women’s alpine ski teams was a first team selection. Cochran’s name will now be forwarded onto the national ballot for consideration as a national academic All-American. She already earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Team earlier this year. Cote, winner of the 2005 J. Edward Donnelly Award as Vermont’s top female senior student-athlete, was the team MVP for the Catamount hockey squad. A top student-athlete academically, she was named to the American Women's Hockey Coaches Association (AWHCA) Division I National Scholar-Athlete Team this season as well. Cote graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a 3.71 GPA. She was named the “Outstanding Senior in Physical Education” in the teacher licensure program and was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi international honors society in education. Cote was also actively involved in the campus and surrounding community during her four years at Vermont. In 2005, she coordinated a group of UVM student-athletes that were involved in the Connecting Youth Mentoring Program at the Williston Central School in Williston, Vermont. Cote wrapped up her stellar career for the Catamounts between the pipes this past season, setting the UVM career saves record in the process. She finished her career ranked second all-time in NCAA Division I women’s hockey history with 3,221 saves and holds the NCAA single-season saves mark with 1,332 stops, which she accomplished as a junior. Cote earned many honors on and off the ice including being the first Catamount named ECAC Hockey League Goaltender of the Year and a First Team selection. She also garnered New England Hockey Writers Division I All-Star honors, was selected as a National Strength and Conditioning All-American and was a finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian Award. Cochran, a physics major with a 3.98 GPA, earned two All-America citations in her first NCAA Ski Championship appearance in 2005. She finished sixth in the slalom and eighth in the giant slalom as a member of the UVM alpine team. Cochran also earned All-East honors with a strong performance at the EISA Championship Carnival. The Catamounts finished as national runners-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships, that were hosted by Vermont at Stowe Mountain Resort and Trapp Family Lodge. During the soccer season, Cochran tied the UVM school record for most goals in a game with four in a 5-1 victory over Marist, after entering the game with just three goals on the season. She scored two goals, including the game-winner, and handed out an assist in Vermont’s 4-0 shutout over Boston University, the Catamounts first win over the Terriers since 1996. Cochran netted the game-winning goal and handed out an assist in a 2-1 victory over UMBC. Her three points in the contest allowed her to set new single season records at Vermont for most points (31) and goals (13). She finished the 2004 season leading America East in scoring (31 points) and goals (13). Cochran was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team and NSCAA/adidas All-Northeast Region Team. She also earned a spot on the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer All-Academic District I First Team and the 2004 ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-America Third Team. She is the first women’s soccer player at Vermont to earn Academic All-America honors. Cote and Cochran are the fifth and sixth UVM student-athletes to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honors in 2004-05. Seniors Lani Boardman (York, Maine) and Derek Miller (Pelham, N.H.) earned spots on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Women’s Basketball and Baseball First Teams, respectively. Senior Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), a member of the UVM men’s Noridc ski team, was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Men’s At-Large First Team and is a finalist for national academic All-America honors. --30— Vermont Athletic Communications
