The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, ANSTO, is a leading Australian multi-disciplinary research and development organisation focussed upon delivering the benefits of nuclear science and technology to community and industry.
The Institute for Nuclear Geophysiology of ANSTO is seeking a dedicated scientist with strong interests in applications of radio- and stable isotopes in a range of current and emerging climate and environmental issues.
The Institute has projects aimed at applications of isotopes in the hydro- and geo-sphere and focused on climate change, paleoclimate and water resources. We have a wide range of instruments including three accelerators, a SIMS and various radio-analytical facilities. The successful candidate is expected to make significant contributions to this research. Also, you will be expected to maintain existing and develop new services sought by clients and stakeholders.
You will have experience in using isotope techniques to interpret high-resolution records (e.g. in groundwater, corals, ocean sediments, speleothems, tree rings, pollen). You will lead a team of radiochemists using diverse research tools including alpha, beta, and gamma spectrometry and applying analytical methods eg U/Th via TIMS and/or ICP-MS, to stable isotopes (particularly del 18-O and del 13-C) of terrestrial origin. An interest in climate model validation eg in paleoclimates using applications of 14C dating/tracing over the period 0-60 ka and/or applications of cosmogenic studies (10Be+26Al activities ) related to the last glacial cycle for landscape change and chronology of earth system processes would also be valuable.
ANSTO is particularly interested in attracting a small team into the Institute for Nuclear Geophysiology. Candidates who are able to bring one or more co-workers with them are encouraged to seek additional details on this.
You should have a PhD, preferably in Earth Sciences or experimental physics with a strong experience in a range of radio- and stable isotope measuring techniques. A sound knowledge of Quaternary science is desirable. You should be experienced and efficient in project management and have a strong record of successful leadership of research groups.
