Personally, I would not worry about your computer being exposed during the upgrade process.  Antivirus software is a third line of defense against malware.  Your first line of defense is to be aware of security threats, and to practice "safe computing" accordingly.  Your second line of defense is a well maintained computer with all current security patches and a strong administrator password.  Antivirus might catch any remaining baddies that slip through.

I downloaded and installed the unmanaged version to my laptop XP at home
last night.
It went well. The uninstall step of the old version came after, but the
messages were clear.
I decided to unplug my net/DSL connection when XP told me that it was
not protected. A small period of time when SAV was not active, but it
could be a window of opportunity for bad-ware. Is this a realistic
worry? My son tells me that it takes about 4 minutes for bots to detect
a vulnerable node on the web.

Subject: Re: Critical Symantec Antivirus upgrade now available

The installer was tweaked "not at all". We had very good success with
testing the initial build, and decided to release it unmodified. The
feedback provided by this community was invaluable. Thank you very much

for your help, all.

Good news. How much did you tweak last week's test download? If I

loaded

that, do I need to re-load this released version?

Thanks,
Chip

An updated version of Symantec Antivirus for Windows is now available

for

download:

http://www.uvm.edu/software/

Version 10.1.0.401 fixes a severe vulnerability in the Symantec

Antivirus

10.x family of products. Details on the vulnerability are available

here:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/2006.05.25.html

Versions of Symantec Antivirus prior to 10.x (7.x-9.x) do not contain

this

vulnerability. Users of all previous versions are, however, still
encouraged to upgrade at this time. Earlier antivirus software

releases

do not provide adequate protection against modern malware threats.

If you have any questions or issues with this upgrade, please contact

the

CIT Helpline via email at [log in to unmask] or via telephone at

656-2604.

Thanks to all in the IT community who helped to test this release

this

past week.
