There are several shell options available on giraffe. What shell were
you trying to use?

If you use bash, syntax like:

#!/bin/bash

TESTFILE=$HOME/test.lis

if [ -e $TESTFILE ]; then
         rm $TESTFILE
fi

will do the job.
