Hi Missy - Any public official who is authorized by law to give oaths my swear in a police officer. A selectboard member cannot unless he or she is a notary or a justice of the peace.  Note that police officers are ex-officio notaries so the police chief could swear in the new officers.  Deb

Yes, he must take an oath--it is a special one for police officers.  If you give me your FAX number, I'll fax it to you.
