Mike, it's not every OT post that can generate this much traffic.  That, my 
friend, is something morbidly special.

BTW, the reason for the slanted stripes going down to the right was that it 
originally mimicked the stains that a soldier, wiping his sword clean of his 
opponent's blood, would leave behind as he drew it across on his cravat on 
his uniform before sheathing the weapon.  Since most soldiers were 
righthanded, it made sense that most of the stains angled down to the right.

I may be incorrect, but I believe that the US and British forces wore their 
swords on opposite sides of their uniforms.

The same issues arise in court when I draw blood from an opponent.   Thank 
goodness I'm wearing a tie.
