Employment Institute - Winter Teletraining Series
Session I: January 16, 2007 - 1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. (Eastern
Time)
"Organizational Leadership: Managing through the Axis of
Inertia"
Presenter: Don Lavin
Session Description:
Despite the best of intentions, many community rehabilitation programs
and adult habilitation centers serving adults with significant
disabilities throughout the United States get bogged down in
implementing their goals to extend job placement and integrated
employment in the community workforce. The purpose of this
presentation is to examine the core factors that contribute to the
inertia and derail organizations from making meaningful and lasting
changes. This presenter will focus on issues of organizational
leadership, change, and implementing proven strategies to increase job
placement performance and integrated employment outcomes in the
community labor force. This training teleconference is suitable for
both management and direct service practitioners of organizations
serving a broad array of participants with disabilities.
Instructor Bio:
Don Lavin, Vice President, Rise, Incorporated, holds a
Masters of Science Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from
Minnesota State University at Mankato. He served as rehabilitation
counselor for three years prior to becoming a senior manager at Rise,
Incorporated in 1976. In the last 30 years, he has provided leadership
in the planning and implementation of customized and supported
employment services for more than 1,400 individuals. Lavin manages
customized and supported employment services leading to integrated
employment in the workforce in support of adults with developmental
disabilities, serious and persistent mental illnesses, traumatic brain
injuries, deaf and hard of hearing, deaf-blind, challenging-to-employ
welfare recipients, and youth in transition from school-to-careers.
Many of Rise's programs have received national and state awards for
program creativity and outcome excellence. Lavin has authored eight
publications related to the delivery of job placement and supported
employment services for youth and adults with significant
disabilities. Also, he is a prolific writer and maintains a blog of
commentaries and actual stories of people with disabilities who have
entered the workforce through access to customized employment
