Dear List members,
best regards
Jochen Schmitt
within the
DFG-Project COIN “Comparison of Interglacials” we
offer the following open position:
PhD student
with
Diploma or MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Geochemistry, Geoecology or
related
fields
Glacier ice from polar ice sheets represents the
only direct archive to
retrieve information about the paleoatmosphere’s trace gas composition.
Of
special interest are changes in the atmospheric CO2
concentration,
and especially to identify the processes driving these changes. One key
information which allows to analyze the interaction between atmospheric
CO2
and climate is the stable isotopic composition of CO2 (d13C).
During
the last years, a new technique for d13C analysis
on ice cores has been developed at AWI to provide an access to this new
information.
The goal of this PhD position is to measure a
high-precision d13C
record from ice core samples with this recently
developed technique. Once analyzed, the d13C time
series will be interpreted in close collaboration with modelers. A
special
focus of this work will lie on variations within Interglacials (warm
periods)
as these time intervals allow to pinpoint differences and similarities
in
global carbon cycle of the past with the current anthropogenic changes.
Ideally, the successful applicant would already
have some experience with
stable isotope analysis and a basic understanding of the global carbon
cycle.
We offer a state-of-the-art stable isotope lab equipped with several
isotope-ratio mass spectrometers with sample preparation equipment and
a cold
laboratory facility.
This work is part of the COIN project within the
framework of the DFG
focus program INTERDYNAMIK, which aims to link climate and carbon cycle
modeling approaches with records from ice cores and sediments. Besides
AWI, participating
institutions are the Department of Geosciences at the
The successful candidate is expected to
participate in field campaigns in
polar regions for several months. The position is limited to three
years, the
salary is according to the German renumeration system 13/2 TVöD. For
more
information please feel free to contact PD Dr. Hubertus Fischer

AWI is an equal opportunity
employer.
