*Vermont *Statewide 8.6.07 *VT0403.06 This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for August 6, 2007 covering the period July 30-August 5, 2007. This week's highlights include Vermont's first confirmed SANDHILL CRANE fledgling which was observed with parents at Bristol Pond on 8/2 and 8/5, a WHIMBREL flying overhead in Westmore on 8/2, several CASPIAN TERN sightings (1 in Grand Isle on 7/31 and 8/4, 1 at Delta Park on 8/3, 2 at Sandbar State Park on 8/5 and 2 along northern Lake Champlain on 8/5) and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT in Vernon on 7/30. A MERLIN was sighted in Delta Park on 8/3, in Northwood Park in Rutland Town on 8/4 and at Sandbar State Park on 8/5. The following shorebirds were seen this week: 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at Brilyea Access and 1 at McCuen Slang on 8/5, 73 KILLDEER at Brilyea Access on 8/5, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at Dead Creek on 8/1 and 9 on 8/5, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in Grand Isle on 7/30, 6 at Dead Creek on 8/1 and 36 at Brilyea Access on 8/5, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER at Brilyea Access and one along northern Lake Champlain on 8/5, 5 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS at Brilyea Access on 8/5, the season's first migrating WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER in Grand Isle on 8/4, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER at Dead Creek on 8/1, 10 LEAST SANDPIPERS at Dead Creek on 8/1 and possibly several hundred on 8/5 and 3 at McCuen Slang on 8/5, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER at Brilyea Access on 8/5. An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 TREE SWALLOWS were gathered together in Orwell 7/29 and 50 - 100 in Whiting on 7/31.
