Very true, however, its not up to the technologist to tell the patient about a positive finding in most institutions, but yes they do have a right to know.
But to answer the question future grief is a loaded question. If the contralateral leg starts to present with findings then maybe anticoagulation is not working in the first place.

what happens when this patient comes back and they want both legs scanned and now there is thrombus found in the opposite leg from the first thrombus. they will ask is this old or is this new? In the case of a positive leg it will save you future grief to take the extra time to scan the other leg.
