Enosburgh Town Forest

A male downy working a pileated's freshly excavated hole in a white pine tree was the image of the day yesterday. The pileated had just flown, a dark shadow heading further into the stand of pines, and the downy flew over to the hole to investigate.

Green pine needles above, yellow pine chips dropping from the hole, and the little black and white downy, crisp and clean with the splash of red on its head, working the edge of the hole and disappearing inside momentarily.
