Dear all,
this is an /important topic/:
Ty Coplen has prepared a manuscript regarding rules for reporting stable
isotope measurements. These rules cover the delta notation, the
representation of data in charts and equations, aspects of
standardization and the like. The manuscript, once accepted by the IUPAC
Commission on Isotope Abundances and Atomic weights (CIAAW,
http://ciaaw.org/) and by the IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on
Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols
(ICTNS,http://www.iupac.org/standing/ictns.html) is intended to form the
basis for future communication of isotopic results.
As an example, the manuscript recommends to abandon the factor 1000 in
the delta equation, it encourages certain ways of expressing delta
relations and proposes to discard others in frequent use, it labels
several well-loved units (e.g. the per meg, a favorite of mine) as
'deprecated' and so on. I think this is a serious issue. Ty has made a
serious attempt to come up with a concise set of recommendations to
embrace the isotope world in the SI system of units.

The manuscript is available from
http://www.iupac.org/reports/provisional/index.html.

Comments to the manuscript should be sent to Ty Coplen
([log in to unmask]) directly or to the secretary of CIAAW, Michael
Wieser ([log in to unmask]).

Regards Willi
