Dear all!

This is just to remind you that the deadline for abstract submission for the upcoming GAC-MAC 2008 is January 20.

We would like to draw your attention on the following Symposium on Climate Reconstruction in May 2008. Note that abstracts can be submitted electronically (http://quebec2008.net) from mid-December 2007 until mid-January 2008. Please circulate this information.

Ciao

Geological Association and Mineralogical Association of Canada - GAC-MAC/Québec 2008

THEME: Sustainable Environment
Symposium SY4 on
Recent advances in isotopic reconstruction of climatic changes over the last centuries - temperature and precipitation series

Specific dates:
May 26-27 2008 (Monday and Tuesday)

Organizers: Martine M. Savard (Geological Survey of Canada), René Roy (Hydro-Québec)
Contact: [log in to unmask]

Sponsor: Hydro-Québec

The aim of this symposium is to promote exchange and diffuse recent advancements in reconstructing climate over the last centuries (up to one millennium), by using natural archival systems coupled with isotope geochemistry. We welcome research contributions extending the climatic records for both, temperature and precipitation, by producing reconstructed series as based on tree rings, fossil trees, peat cores, cavern deposits, ice cores, etc. Overview papers and papers presenting new methodological approaches or protocols for sampling or analyses are welcome as well.

Invited lecturers
Steven W. Leavitt, Ph.D., Pr., University of Arizona, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, Tucson, USA.
Topic: Recent advancements in the use of tree-ring isotope series to reconstruct climatic conditions for the last centuries, with case studies as part of the overview.

Valérie Masson-Delmotte, Ph. D., Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE), Gif-sur-Yvette, France.

Topic: Comparing reconstructed climate series based on isotopic results obtained for various natural archive systems (i.e., ice cores, tree rings), using examples from the last centuries (1000 years or less).

NOTE: We expect that Québec City’s 400th anniversary celebrations will increase demands for accommodations during 2008.  Consequently, we strongly suggest that participants book right now and take advantage of the blocks of rooms and attractive rates negotiated by the organizing committee.
