RE:             Focus the Nation

Across the United States, students at over 1300 universities are organizing for Focus the Nation, a “teach-in” about global warming on January 31, 2008. I am pleased to report that students here at the University of Vermont, supported by many faculty and staff, have developed one of the nation’s most ambitious agendas for the event. They have expanded beyond the one-day national teach-in and are preparing dozens of events over six days.

From January 27 until February 1, classes, displays and trainings are planned to bring attention to the latest scientific findings and new ideas for action on how to slow climate change. I am impressed by the students’ leadership, working to find creative solutions to this, perhaps the most pressing problem of our time.

I encourage all students, staff and faculty to learn more about this series of events and to participate as they are moved and able. So far, more than 70 faculty members have agreed to offer “teach-in” lectures or discussions in their regularly scheduled classes, and the student organizers welcome as many additional faculty members as would care to do so.
