Fellow Students,

Happy Thursday! We are in the midst of quite a lot of excitement here on campus. The Mid-Term Election results will be in soon; the weeklong celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. has been a resounding success thus far; DC Delirium is a nice break from all of the stimulating conversation where students can relax and enjoy all the Davis Center has to offer; and Focus the Nation, perhaps one of the largest series of events the campus community has seen in recent memory, is well on its way. Don't be left behind! Read on for details about these upcoming events and more.

Always at your service,

Kesha and DaVaughn

What Is SGA Doing For You?

Mid-Term Elections: Last Chance to Vote!
The SGA apologizes for the confusion and technical difficulties stemming from configuration problems with our voting system.  The polls opened yesterday morning successfully and will close at noon today.  You will be updated on the winners shortly.

Ever Felt Marginalized On Campus? Say It Now!
The Committee on Diversity, Equity and Environmental Ethics has launched its first ever Say It Now! campaign.  Say It Now! is a video project adapted from StoryCorps, a nationwide video journal initiative (www.storycorps.net). Say It Now! is a project in which we invite students from all backgrounds to recall an experience or event that made them feel uncomfortable or marginalized because of a bias towards their racial, sexual, and/or gender identity while at the University of Vermont.  Our goal is to collect these stories on video or in writing and create a film to be shown around campus and on UVMtv.  We can schedule times for these interviews whenever it is convenient for you. If you do not feel comfortable on film, please consider submitting a written story- the more the better! This is an opportunity for all students to express themselves and tell a part of their story to fellow students, teachers and administrators.
Please feel free to contact CODEE Chair Jesse Bragg with your questions and concerns ([log in to unmask]).

SGA's Got Your Back
At our last Senate meeting, senators voted in favor of a resolution aimed at the improvement, clarification, and expansion of the Got Your Back policy, offering protection to students who choose to notify the authorities of jeopardized student health in the campaign against unsafe alcohol and drug use.
See attached legislation and please feel free to contact Senator Julia Michel with your questions and concerns ([log in to unmask]).

Upcoming Legislation...

Student Action To Thank ResLife, CatCard, and Physical Plant for Fixing Security Breaches
Senators will be voting on the recognition and appreciation of the timely response from the University?s Department of Residential Life, CatCard Office, and Physical Plant in effectively dealing with ResHall security problems and their continued support in the future for issues dealing with Residential Hall security.
See attached legislation and please feel free to contact Senator Tom Ford-Hutchinson with your questions and concerns ([log in to unmask]).

SGA To Vote On Support for DC Voting Rights
Senators will be voting on  whether or not the UVM student body will lend support to the DC Voting Rights Act now circulating the United States Congress.  Currently, citizens of the District of Columbia do not have the right to vote.  Vermont
Senators Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders as well as Congressman Peter Welch have supported the legislation.  New Hampshire Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu have not.
See attached legislation and please feel free to contact Senator Eddy Foster with your questions and concerns ([log in to unmask]).

SGA To Vote On Legislation Supporting Higher Education Funding Recommendations
Senators will be voting whether or not to support the findings of the Governor's Commission on Higher Education, asking that the Vermont State Legislature and Governor Jim Douglas support the findings of the Commission and increase state funding for higher education to 8 percent.
See attached legislation and please feel free to contact Legislative Affairs Chair Scott McCarty with your questions and concerns ([log in to unmask]).

UVM Writers Needed for the Water Tower

We at the Water Tower, UVM's alternative student newspaper, are looking for additional writers.

Whom we want:
Students who are interested in writing edgy, humorous, or serious pieces for the UVM community. If you have something to say about UVM, Burlington, America, or anything in between, we want you.

Why we're dope:
We're not your momma's newspaper. When you write for the Water Tower, your creativity won't be constrained, and you're writing won't be watered-down. Our editing process is democratic. You get to see the edited version of your article before its publication, so you'll never have a ?WTF, I didn't write that? moment again. Nothing is too controversial, edgy, or bizarre.

Pay:
We don't have any money, but don't rule out your rapid ascendancy to UVM superstardom.

Contact us:

Email us at [log in to unmask] if you're interested. We want to hear from you.

Rock on,

The Water Tower
