until energy prices caught up

Its worth pointing out that every form of energy is subsidized to some extent. Wind is neck and neck with conventional sources of power as the cheapest new form of generation that one can install in the USA right now (mind you I am talking about utility scale wind, not residential scale). Wind competes economically in 2008 with conventional sources, without the boost of the voluntary renewable energy credit (REC) market. Solar does not.

Negawatts are still cheaper than Megawatts though.
