Since it has been on my "list of things to do", I thought I would share
what I have so far on the NIH requirements & citation management
programs. Some of it is redundant. It looks like RefWorks & Endnote
are the 2 programs paying any attention to this at this time.

As previously stated, Wisconsin got a jump on the RefWorks thing and has
posted what to do. Basically, the PMCID # is in the notes field when
available, and the instructions provide the steps to put in it a custom
field - see www.library.wisc.edu/scp/nih/faq.html#refworks

EndNote, at first had a similar solution, but has since automated the
process of putting the PMCID # in custom field 2 - see their FAQ at
http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/import/faq15.asp , but you still
need to set up the custom field. Also, the EndNote rep @ MLA said that
version X2 will give it (PMCID) its own field, but I have no literature
on that.

EndNote Web is not currently doing anything with the PMCID # and it is
not imported currently. With a quick perusal of their site, I could
find no info about their plans (or not) to modify anything. It is
updated quarterly, so don't look for anything anytime soon.

A quick check of Reference Manger found no FAQs about the NIH
requirements and the program does not import that piece of information
in any field (e.g., notes field).

Bookends - a Mac program - likewise had no info on their program and the
NIH requirements.

Hope that helps.

Karen
