When Lyndon looked into this last year, our bank told us that it was illegal for a credit card company to charge the fee to the customer using the card. That's why we decided against it, as we didn't want to increase our rates to cover the cost of credit card fees.

There is a company (sorry, can't think of the name) that offers this service. I know Berlin and Montpelier were looking into it, and I saw a demonstration. Looked good. The demo was arranged through TD Banknorth.

How many Clerks and Treas. out there accept credit cards for payment of taxes, utilities, fees, etc.? Do any of you have a web site wherein a citizen can pay by credit card online?

Also, I recall years ago that we had this discussion and someone informed us of a company that charged the customer their fee, not the town.
