I've been asked how much material may be used in an article when the author
is quoting from her own dissertation which, as I recall, is copyrighted in
her own name. Specifically she asks: can I lift whole paragraphs or only
sentences or short sections which I must then put in quotation marks citing
dissertation?

I think I'd have the answer for her if she were using someone else's work,
but I feel a bit unsure about this one.

Some authoritative advice would be appreciated.
