Rutland County Audubon had a spectacular day for the annual "Winter Regulars and Rarities in the Champlain Valley" trip today. Eighteen participants tallied 42 species. The weather was even nice enough for a picnic lunch.

Highlights included 29 Red-tailed Hawks and 4 Rough-legged Hawks. Sixteen Bald Eagles, including two immatures bathing next to each other in the water, were observed at Ft. Cassin.

Waterfowl included Canada Goose (9), American Black Duck (36), Mallard (44), Bufflehead (6), Common Goldeneye (581), Hooded Merganser (8), and Common Merganser (94).

Common Loon (3) and Horned Grebe (9) were also seen.

The most unusual bird of the day was a Double-crested Cormorant at Converse Bay. Two Northern Shrikes were observed in Ferrisburg.
