Were you ever the elected town clerk before the Charter change?

Brattleboro has a charter and I am appointed annually. Because I am an
employee I have all benefits and cannot be relieved of my duties without
cause. This has been the case for many years here and works well for me. The
clerk has always been appointed annually by the selectboard and ratified by
town meeting at the annual meeting. There are several proposed charter
changes to be voted on this year and one of them changes the procedure of
appointing a clerk to simply having the position hired by the town manager as
the other department heads are.

Anybody

Can a town with a Charter choose to have the Town Clerk appointed by the
manager or selectboard rather than be elected?

If the answer is yes, which town (s) have done this.
