That is a very good question as we are experiencing declining dog registrations as our population is continuing to grow.  We send reminder cards, phone them a few times to remind them but with no bite (pardon the pun) to our late fees and the fact that our council is not going to put down a dog except in rare circumstances, we need to find a way to encourage people to register.

Brattleboro’s town ordinances state that if dogs are not licensed the owner may be fined $100.

Hi Everyone,

Do you know if towns are allowed to tack on a penalty, in addition to the 50% late payment fee, for dogs that are not licensed by April 1st? The cost to the town of paying the constable to track down unlicensed dog owners is more than the relatively insignificant late payment fee.

Thanks,

Martha
