Community Re:Appointment
of
Provost and Senior Vice President
I am pleased to
announce that earlier today I received
approval from the University of Vermont
Board of Trustees to appoint Professor of
Economics Jane E. Knodell to the position
of Provost and Senior Vice President
effective immediately. The appointment
follows a search process that has been
under way throughout the fall semester.
Professor Knodell has been serving as
Interim Provost and Senior Vice President
since July 2009. During her tenure, she
has shown the leadership skills,
creativity, and high level of energy
necessary to succeed in this challenging
position. At the same time, she has proved
to be an exceptional colleague and team
member. Please join me in congratulating
Dr. Knodell as she assumes the permanent
position.
Jane Knodell has been a member of the UVM
faculty since 1986. She has served the
University in a variety of administrative
roles. She earned her bachelor’s degree
with honors and distinction in 1976 from
Stanford University and her Ph.D. in
Economics, also from Stanford, in 1984.
She brings to her role as the University’s
chief academic officer a record as an
accomplished teacher and as a leading
scholar of central banking in the early
United States. Her recent work has
appeared in top journals, including the
Financial History Review (2010) and The
Journal of Economic History (2006). In
addition, she is an active member of the
Burlington community. She served on the
City Council from 1993 to 1997 and again
from 1999 to 2009. She was elected
President of the City Council in 1999 and
2000.
I want to express deep appreciation on
behalf of our academic community to all of
the members of the search committee, with
special recognition of its chair, Rex
Forehand, the Heinz and Rowena Ansbacher
Professor of Psychology and Distinguished
University Professor, and its vice chair,
Patricia Prelock, Professor of
Communication Sciences and Disorders and
Dean of the College of Nursing and Health
Sciences. The committee managed the search
process with high professionalism and
provided thoughtful assessments of both
recommended candidates, as did many other
members of the UVM community who
participated in the interview process. I
also want to extend my appreciation to Dr.
Eleanor Miller, Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, for her willingness to
stand as a strong candidate for this
critically important position.
All of us enjoy the privilege of membership
in UVM’s vibrant and inspiring academic
community, and we all have much important
work to accomplish together in the months
and years to come. I look forward to our
collectively meeting the challenges ahead. I
have every confidence that Provost Knodell
will contribute greatly to our success.
