Celebrate the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A series of activities honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. continues this week. Learn more about this year's celebration, which includes a talk by Cornel West, professor of religion and African American studies at Princeton University. Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in this week's MLK Food Drive, sponsored by UVM's Human Resource Services. Drop off non-perishable food items by noon on Friday at five campus locations: Davis Center atrium; Given/Rowell brickyard; Patrick Gym lobby; Living/Learning fireplace lounge; Waterman Building, College Street entrance. This project supports the community-building work of the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. Information.
New at the Fleming Museum
Now open: Masked Spectacle: Commedia dell'Arte and Bread & Puppet Theater. This exhibition combines prints by American/Hungarian artist Giuseppe Pecsenke (1942-1989) featuring characters and scenes from the independent theater form, Commedia dell'Arte, with masks and puppets from the radical puppet theater group, Bread & Puppet, based in Glover, Vt. Opening Tuesday, Jan. 25:
Under the Big Top: The Fine Art of the Circus in America. The circus was recognized in late-19th-century Europe as a subject of avant-garde art, but in America, it was not until artist Robert Henri's appeal, in 1923, to paint contemporary life that artists began to search out and paint scenes of this popular entertainment. Georges Rouault: Cirque de L'Étoile Filante. The world of the circus had always interested French artist Georges Rouault, with its contrast of superficial brightness and the infinite sadness of the clown's life. Information.
Pippo Lionni. The Fleming Museum is delighted to present work this spring by Paris-based artist Pippo Lionni, in the Museum's New Media Niche, located in the lobby. Information.

Financial Awards for Students Who Make the Grade and Work for Social Justice
United Academics, the faculty union at UVM, is accepting applications for two financial awards to honor students who exemplify academic excellence and commitment to social justice. The Jeffrey Brace Book Award will provide $500 awards for books and supplies to students who will be enrolled at UVM full-time in fall '11. The Linda Backus Memorial Award of $1,000 will be presented to an undergraduate student who has completed at least two years and has an immediate family member who is a union member in Vermont. "Managing References With Endnote." Bring your lunch and your questions to the Dana Library Conference Room for our weekly Brown Bag session. This week, learn the basics of Endnote. Caffeine and Snoring Research Study
Does your snoring keep your partner awake? Do you drink coffee, soda, or other caffeinated drinks? The University of Vermont Department of Medicine is studying people who snore and use caffeine. We are looking for adults to stop using caffeine and who have a regular bed partner to report their snoring for four weeks. $25 compensation for participation. Information: 656-4560.
UVM Research Study for Women Age 50-60 With Memory Concerns
Are you concerned about your memory? Do you think your memory might be worse than some of your friends? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a research study about memory being conducted at the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit at UVM and Fletcher Allen Health Care. You must be post-menopausal (no period for 1 year plus), no history of breast cancer, and no hormone use during the past year. Research Study: Mechanisms of Specific Trunk Exercises in Low Back Pain
Are you between 21-55 years old and suffer from chronic, low back pain? You may be eligible to participate in a research study, conducted by the University of Vermont, that includes the following:
- Pre and post-treatment testing sessions at the UVM Human Motion Analysis Lab (includes a free physical therapy evaluation)
- Six physical therapy treatment sessions with a physical therapist at no charge to you or your health insurance
- $110 total compensation upon completion of study
- Six,12, 24 month questionnaires
- You may be randomly selected to participate in an exercise adherence portion of the study
The purpose of this study, conducted by Sharon M. Henry, professor, Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, is to examine whether or not matching treatment to your specific symptoms is better at decreasing your pain and increasing your function than a non-specific strengthening/conditioning program. Speech Study
Are you left-handed? Over 18? Interested in learning how your brain processes language? You may be eligible for a study involving cognitive processing of language and its impact on individuals' speech. Participants Needed for Smoking Cessation Research
The Anxiety and Health Research Lab at UVM is looking for individuals, 18-65 years of age, who are daily cigarette smokers and who are motivated to quit smoking. Eligible participants will receive free cognitive behavioral group treatment and nicotine replacement and will be compensated for their time.
The goal of this federally funded research study is to investigate whether the effectiveness of current standard smoking cessation treatment can be enhanced by adding a wellness or exercise intervention.
