The code for Medicare AAA screening is G0389.  The indications are:

·        Has a family history of AAA

·        Is a man age 65 to 75 who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his lifetime

·        Is a beneficiary, who manifests other risk factors in a beneficiary category recommended for screening by the United States Preventative Services Task Force regarding AAA, as specified by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the national coverage determination process.

This AAA screening can only be ordered by the physician who is doing the patient's Welcome to Medicare physical and must be done within the first six months of the physical.  Our lab evaluates the entire abdominal aorta as well as the iliac arteries and if they do have an AAA, we check the common femoral and popliteal artery dimensions.  However, since this law has passed (back in 2007), I think we have done two.  It is unfortunate that the vast majority of people who go on Medicare don't get the benefit of this screening.

Subject: AAA screening

What is the code for the AAA one time Medicare screening exam?  What are appropriate indications, or is it just done as part of Medicare enrollment?

What type of protocol do most people follow for this, full aorta duplex or just prox mid distal measurements?

I suddenly have a cardiologist gone wild over these and have 10 ordered in the next few days!
