Hi All,
Mad Birders Pat Folsom, Ali Wagner, Patti Haynes and Scott Sainsbury made the slog over Ap Gap this morning to join forces with Addison County denizen, Ian Worley for a haunt of the lake and farms in the Chimney Point to Snake Mountain region.
A "refreshing" wind was blowing at the ferry / unbridge (as Pat Folsom so appropriately calls it) when we started counting Mergansers at 8:30. Two hours later, we were still counting. Only kidding -- but there were A LOT of them (that a scientific term, Dr. Worley tells us). There were also 2 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 3 Lesser Scaup, a Female Redhead (thanks for the ID Ian and Greg Provost who joined us for a bit), 2 Shovelers, a couple Hoodies, a group of Goldeneye, a Red-breasted Merg, a few Ring-bills, Canadas, Mallards, the usual gulls, etc.. Feels like spring is coming!
We haunted around the south end of Snake Mountain and saw lots of red-winged blackbirds, Common Grackle, some Cardinals, Tree Sparrows, a Cooper's Hawk, Robins, a Fish Crow, a Pheasant and others. Again, some hints of spring.
In several places we saw Horned Larks on farms. And a couple small groups of Snow Buntings. So, winter's not gone yet. We were hoping for a Longspur and / or Pipit, but didn't come up with either.
