ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Spring Festival Of Plays

   SENIOR THEATRE MAJORS PRESENT THEIR FINAL PROJECTS, representing  
the culmination of their years of training at UVM. The 2011 schedule  
includes six eclectic performances -- adaptions, an original play, and  
musical theater. Three groups will present their work over six  
performances, from April 14-17 at Royall Tyler Theatre. Learn more and

Body Composition Analysis

   FIND OUT WHAT YOUR BODY IS MADE OF. The analysis, which uses  
bioelectric impedance testing -- a process as simple as standing on a  
scale -- includes your BMI, muscle mass, fat mass, bone mass,  
metabolic age and much more. Valued at $75, the analysis is offered by  
the Exercise and Movement Science Student Association for $10.  
Proceeds benefit the association.

   Guidelines:

   * No alcohol within 24 hours of the test
   * No exercise within 4 hours before
   * No caffeine or food within 2 hours before
   * Come well hydrated: 2-4 8oz glasses of water

   Contraindications:

   * Pregnant women
   * People with any implantable device (i.e. pacemakers)
   * People with heart problems

  Third Annual Writing In The Disciplines Institute

   THE APPLICATION OF THE WID INSTITUTE, WHICH TAKES PLACE THIS YEAR  
FROM MAY 17-20, IS FRIDAY, APRIL 15. supports full-time faculty who  
are developing or revising an undergraduate course with a significant  
writing component. Through the Institute, participants will integrate  
writing into an undergraduate course, focusing on enhancing student  
learning. Institute activities will also encourage participants to  
reflect on their own writing experiences in order to better shape  
students' writing experiences. Participants will have opportunities to  
share their work with colleagues during the following academic year  
and will have priority in receiving additional WID support as they

Eat Local And Organic With Common Ground

   RESERVE YOUR CSA SHARE WITH UVM'S STUDENT-RUN FARM NOW for a bounty  
of vegetables each week from June 22-September 28 (a total of 14  
weeks). The "Master's Degree" share, at $365, typically feeds a  
household while the "Bachelor's Degree" share typically feeds 1-2

   This week is the last chance to sign up for CSA shares before money  
is due April 15th. Raffle tickets for the Bachelor's Degree share are

Dismantling Rape Culture Conference

   REGISTRATION FOR THE 6TH ANNUAL DISMANTLING RAPE CULTURE  
CONFERENCE, taking place on April 12, is now open to all UVM faculty,  
staff and students. The conference is free for UVM affiliates and  
students from all Vermont colleges and universities. There is a $20  
fee for community members. Come for the full day or a portion of the  
conference.

   GROUP FITNESS DISCOUNT: GET THE DROP-IN GROUP FITNESS PASS AT A  
DISCOUNTED PRICE BEGINNING APRIL 11. Buy the pass at the new price and

Are You Thinking About Starting Or Expanding Your Family?

   WE ARE RECRUITING HEALTHY WOMEN WHO WISH TO CONCEIVE FOR A STUDY ON  
PREECLAMPSIA. Preeclampsia is a disease of pregnancy, associated with  
high blood pressure and protein in the urine in pregnant women. It can  
be dangerous to both mother and baby. In this study, we will be  
looking at the way differences in body function can contribute to the  
development of preeclampsia.

   If you are a woman between the ages of 18 and 42, plan to conceive  
in the next year, and

   * Have never had a child before or
   * Have had preeclampsia in the past or
   * Have Type 1 diabetes or
   * Have a personal or family history of hypertension or preeclampsia

   We will provide you with ovulation detection kits to aid timing  
your conception. Financial compensation of up to $375 is provided. If

Preschool Age Children Needed As Control Participants

   PRESCHOOL AGE CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 3 AND 6 WHO DO NOT  
STUTTER are invited to participate as a control group for a research  
study of emotional changes and stuttering.  Study will involve four  
appointments at UVM (2 immediately and 2 in several months). The  
appointments include assessments of language and parent questionnaires

Smokers Needed For Brief Research - Not A Quit Study

   NOT IN THE MOOD TO QUIT SMOKING? The Anxiety and Health Research  
Lab at UVM is looking for heavy smokers to participate in a brief  
smoking study. This is not a quit study. The study involves two visits  
to the lab and a total length of approximately 4 hours. If eligible,  
you may be asked to stop smoking for 12 hours. Participants will earn  
up to $40 in cash. Please complete a brief survey online[32] which

Chronic Pain Research Study

   DO YOU SUFFER FROM CHRONIC BACK PAIN? You may be eligible to  
participate in a research study involving: group therapy or chronic  
pain education, free of charge; functional MRI (fMRI) scans of the  
brain; financial compensation for participation. If you are interested  
you need to have current back pain for 6 months or longer; be age 18

Weight Management Study

   ARE YOU (OR IS YOUR CHILD) 12-18 YEARS OLD AND CONCERNED ABOUT  
BEING OVERWEIGHT? Researchers at UVM are looking for participants for  
a free weight management program. You will receive nutrition, physical  
activity, and behavioral instruction; complete body composition and  
fitness profile; compensation for time and travel. Information:

Caffeine And Snoring Research Study

   DOES YOUR SNORING KEEP YOUR PARTNER AWAKE? Do you drink coffee,  
soda, or other caffeinated drinks? The University of Vermont  
Department of Medicine is studying people who snore and use caffeine.  
We are looking for adults to stop using caffeine and who have a  
regular bed partner to report their snoring for four weeks. $25  
compensation for participation. Information: 656-4560.

Research Study: Mechanisms Of Specific Trunk Exercises In Low Back Pain

   ARE YOU BETWEEN 21-55 YEARS OLD AND SUFFER FROM CHRONIC, LOW BACK  
PAIN? You may be eligible to participate in a research study,  
conducted by the University of Vermont, that includes the following:

   * Pre and post-treatment testing sessions at the UVM Human Motion  
Analysis Lab (includes a free physical therapy evaluation)
   * Six physical therapy treatment sessions with a physical therapist  
at no charge to you or your health insurance
   * $110 total compensation upon completion of study
   * Six,12, 24 month questionnaires
   * You may be randomly selected to participate in an exercise  
adherence portion of the study

   The purpose of this study, conducted by Sharon M. Henry, professor,  
Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science, College of Nursing  
and Health Sciences, is to examine whether or not matching treatment  
to your specific symptoms is better at decreasing your pain and  
increasing your function than a non-specific

Participants Needed For Smoking Cessation Research

   THE ANXIETY AND HEALTH RESEARCH LAB AT UVM IS LOOKING FOR  
INDIVIDUALS, 18-65 YEARS OF AGE, who are daily cigarette smokers and  
who are motivated to quit smoking. Eligible participants will receive  
free cognitive behavioral group treatment and nicotine replacement and  
will be compensated for their time.

   The goal of this federally funded research study is to investigate  
whether the effectiveness of current standard smoking cessation  
treatment can be enhanced by adding a wellness or exercise intervention.
