Almost ready to chalk up a Lifer, examining at great length a bird at
our kitchen feeder this morning. Looks like a Hairy, acts like a
Hairy, sounds like a Hairy....BUT has a definite big yellow crown
patch. Whaaat? And I also thought I counted three toes.

Alas, I later found another toe, and a mother Hairy feeding this big
squawky baby.

But do immatures display a yellow patch on the crown before it turns
to black? Never saw that before.
