As I am sure most of you who follow jobs on SchoolSpring know, the RCSU currently has an opening for a Director of Information Technology and the job description is a bit vague (http://www.schoolspring.com/job.cfm?jid=56708). As the outgoing Director (I have taken a job at Green Mountain College), the superintendent has asked me to reach out to the IT list to post the job as well as an updated description to the job. That being said, here is a list of some responsibilities that the new Director would be responsible for: 


    • 

Works with building level technology teams to develop/update school and district technology plans. 
    • 

Seeks out resources for technology through grants and other sources. 
    • 

Oversees or assists with the writing, submission, and management of e-rate applications and funding. 
    • 

Helps prepare technology budget for SU schools and provides assistance to administrators with their technology budget. 
    • 

Ensures Internet services are available. 
    • 

Presents options to administration regarding major hardware and software purchases, and if appropriate is involved in obtaining service contracts. 
    • 

Ensures Assistant Technician (1) is supervised and given direction in terms of responsibilities. 
    • 

Able to design and maintain network systems. 
    • 

Able to layout and make changes to network configuration (hubs, switches, servers, etc.) 
    • 

Ensures all data is protected (Firewalls, virus protection, etc.) 
    • 

Provides assistance with development of library systems. 
    • 

Provides assistance with the development, design and maintenance of school web sites. 
    • 

Ability to implement new software. 
    • 

Ability to maintain backup/recovery systems. 
    • 

Ability to train staff on use of new systems and applications. 
    • 

Administers current systems and servers including Linux (server and desktop), Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 2003 (and transition to 2008), and Mac OS X (Desktop) 
    • 

Keeps inventory of schools' software and hardware in an organized manner and updates annually. 
    • 

Installs/upgrades software, hardware, and network systems. 
    • 

Installs, maintains and upgrades the schools' wireless networks 
    • 

Administers all Internet filters. 
    • 

Trains staff on current system and applications. 
    • 

Troubleshoots non-working equipment and repairs or arranges for repairs. 
    • 

Oversees reliable communication system (Eventum ticketing system is in place) for assisting staff with technology problems. 
    • 

Maintains switches and cabling. 
    • 

Works directly with external tech support to problem solve issues related to student data management. 
    • 

Orders supplies and parts. 
    • 

Oversees warranties and warranty repairs. 
    • 

Participates as a member of the SU technology committees. 
    • 

Actively attends regional or higher level meetings. 
    • 

Keeps apprised of changes in the technologies available and directions of future technology development and communicates this information effectively to the superintendent, school boards and administrative team.
