Hi VTLEP'ers, The Montpelier Giant Swallowtail caterpillars (or at least two of them) have formed chrysali (is that the plural?). We're holding them at the North Branch Nature Center on the off-chance that they emerge next spring. I was thinking of storing them in the basement near a bulkhead door so they stay cool, but above freezing for the winter. Unfortunately, they were discovered accidentally by the homeowners while they were doing yard work and may have been inadvertently damaged. They were found earlier this week. www.flickr.com/photos/27953043@N08/6240592022/ (the exuviae is still attached in the photo, and the possible area of damage is visible) Other butterflies at North Branch Nature Center yesterday: Mourning Cloak (very fresh) Red Admiral (very fresh) Monarch Clouded Sulphur Best, Larry -- Larry Clarfeld Environmental Educator Youth Birding Coordinator North Branch Nature Center 713 Elm St. Montpelier, VT 05602 www.NorthBranchNatureCenter.org (802) 229-6206 [log in to unmask]
