<b>CDAE 195 Food Health &amp; Media</b><br>
Pre Req: Juniors and Seniors<br>
Counts: CDAE course and Food Systems Minor course<br>

CONTENT<br>
We will talk about traditional media (news/tv/ advertising) and new media (blogs, cell <br>
phones, internet) contribute to how people think about and act on health and food issues. <br>
We will think about media influences public understandings of food and health, but also <br>
how we can use media to contribute to these understandings.<br>
<br>
READINGS<br>
We will have a mix of book, online, and article readings. I don&#39;t plan to have students <br>
buy a &#39;text&#39; book, but I may ask for students to buy a couple cheaper &#39;popular&#39; press <br>
texts.<br>

ASSIGNMENT<br>
Undergraduate Students: Undergrads will be asked to complete at least 1 hour of <br>
participatory-observations in a food-health context per week. Students will choose one <br>
location for observation. These may include volunteering or frequenting fast food <br>
restaurants, farmers markets, cooking classes, a farm, or a food bank. Each student will <br>
develop a blog and write about his/her/x observations, interpretations, and extensions <br>
once a week.<br>

Graduate Students: Grad Students have two options: (1) blog with some additional <br>
standards of rigor or (2) work in groups or co-authoring with me on research, rhetorical <br>
analysis, or policy analysis.<br>
