Trevor, It would be great if a class could be held, seems like we all have "stuff" in our vaults that seem outdated and unnecessary to hold onto. Maybe we could help speed up the process of updating these standards and practices.

        Hi Stacy-

        Congratulations on your new position.

This (record retention and disposition) is something where the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration ("VSARA"), within the Office of the Secretary of State, can help.

VSARA was created in 2008 and is charged with modernization of records management standards and practices for both State and local government.

One pointer of caution: if you come across a document with a title along the lines of "State of Vermont Retention Time Table for Municipal Records" please _don't_ use it. It was developed by the former Public Records Division of the Department of Buildings and General Services, has been found to contain multiple significant errors (which defy a simple revision and re-issuance) and has been withdrawn.

Feel free to contact me off-list at your convenience (or let me know when would be a good time for me to contact you) and we can go more in-depth as to current and upcoming standards for municipal record retention and disposition.

        Trevor

Does anyone have a basic list of record retention schedule? I am the new town clerk for St. Johnsbury. We are moving to a new building this June and this office and archive vault has not been cleaned out in many years. Please send info on what can be disposed of and dates to hold on to. Example is: we have ballots from 2010.

        Thank you,
