I'm an EDU 20 fan, part of this stems from their student centered privacy policies.  Edmoto while pretty powerful has "big privacy issues" (they collect and share everything).   So my thought would be to include "privacy as part of the comparison.  Very interested in the results.

That is a great suggestion.  We are still working on the comparison criteria and then we were planning on using an open wiki to solicit feedback from anybody who has experience with these various LMS's.  A google form may be more manageable, however.

We are also trying to narrow our focus down to just 2 or 3 of the best of the best.  Right now we have Haiku, Edu20.org, Schoology, Canvas, Edmodo, Sakai, OpenCourse and a few others floating around.

Which leads me to my question for you all?  In your opinion, what are the top 3 LMS's that exist right now?

Thanks all,

Matt -

Might suggest that you and Susan create a google form with your LMS questions, then have folks sign up to provide responses for a particular LMS. A divide and conquer approach. If you try to create a form that mostly multiple-choice, the resulting matrix could be quickly created and highly useful. Just a thought. I'm thinking about having students do this with web 2.0 tools.

Thanks for the clarification Bill.  The comparison matrix will be a broad-based collaborative effort and we will certainly be sharing and soliciting information on the list-serv.

Hello, all,

RE: "It looks like Chamilo is built on a Drupal framework, which means it is a Drupal CMS trying to become an LMS"

This is not accurate. A look at the codebase tells you that at a glance, as does as look at the about page: http://www.chamilo.org/en/about-chamilo

The site at chamilo.org is using Drupal, however, as evidenced by the eerie alien-like favicon.

And, in any case, an LMS built in Drupal wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if it was architected correctly. See https://drupal.psu.edu/project/elms for a good example of how Drupal works in that space.

RE: "I am working with Susan Hennessey (currently with the Tarrant Institute for Innovative Education at UVM) to create a comparison matrix of the the best LMS systems available today." - this sounds great! Will you share that on the list as well?

Cheers,

Bill

Luis,
At first glance, I would say there are better alternatives such as Canvas, Haiku, Edu20, or Schoology.  It looks like Chamilo is built on a Drupal framework, which means it is a Drupal CMS trying to become an LMS, rather than being built from the ground up as an LMS (I think Schoology might be in that category as well).

I am working with Susan Hennessey (currently with the Tarrant Institute for Innovative Education at UVM) to create a comparison matrix of the the best LMS systems available today.  We will be sharing our work with educators throughout Vermont as we progress, so be on the lookout for the LMS Showdown!
