" Who is the Millennial Student and Why does it Matter? "
Twenty-first century literacy demands the ability to use technology,
including visuals and audio segments to enhance personal learning and to
communicate more effectively with others (Looney, 2005). Literacy now
encompasses more than mere reading and comprehending thoughts from text.
Computers, DVD players, cell phones, game consoles, and iPODs (Apple
Computer) are now the norm in students' pre-and post-school day activities.
Choices abound within the video game world. Though these claims are not yet
universally understood and accepted, initial research into new literacies
promotes the notion that a different skill set is required for building
competencies online. Are you prepared?

During the session, participants will brainstorm and consider twenty-first
century literacy demands as part of this interactive collaborative sharing
experience.

"Northeast Open Initiatives "
Blackboard's recent announcement regarding Moodle and Sakai, and the
tremendous chatter it sparked, highlights how critical it is for colleges
and universities to understand the alternative business and development
models associated with open initiatives; the organizations that support
those initiatives, and; how they can affect, not only campus IT policy and
practice, but teaching and learning as well. The Open Initiatives SIG offers
a timely opportunity to hear from leaders in both open communities and the
partners that support them, including:

Michael Feldstein, Online education and technology thought leader and Sakai
Board Member Gary Schwartz, Project Manager for the open source calendar,
Bedework and Jasig Board Member Brian Jacobs, OER Advocate and Founder &
President Akademos, Inc., Gary Gilbert, Software Architect and Sakai
Contributor, Unicon Gunnar Hellekson, Chief Technology Strategist, Red Hat

colleagues who might find it of interest.
